Having spent more than 30 years in the alpine desert of western Colorado, we thoroughly understand the limitations and strengths of cool dryland environments, while at the same time have the experience and understanding to apply appropriate design principles to any climate.

Some of the projects we’ve consulted on include: Sustainable Developments Maytag Mountain Ranch Winding Creek Ranch
Maytag Mountain Ranch is a 3000 acre residential development located along the eastern slopes of Colorado's Sangre de Cristo mountains.  The working vision of Russ and Jeannie Maytag, the community consists of twenty seven 100-acre homesteads who share collective access to recreational opportunities as well as a grass fed beef operation and community center, which revolves around a one-acre forest garden whose design, plant propagation and installation was overseen by Jerome Osentowski of ESD.  Here, community members can congregate, relax and literally enjoy the fruits of their labor - with a diverse multi-storied garden consisting of fruiting trees and shrubs, perennials, herbs, vegetables and fertility providing and beneficial insect attracting plants.  The net result is a breathtaking, grounding community resource that grows more dynamic and productive with each passing season.
Elkstone Greenhouses
Elkstone Greenhouse Village is a small sustainable agricultural development on a large ranch in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  The initial development area is being designed to include a half-acre outdoor permaculture garden, two large greenhouses and a food-processing building with a caretaker apartment.

Elkstone Heirloom Strawberries - The primary goal for the first greenhouse is a crop of ‘Heirloom Strawberries’, grown to be fermented and distilled into a specialty ‘eau de vie’ or fruit brandy.  The second greenhouse will be serve as a tropical and semi-tropical food plant community as well as a seedling propagation facility for the outdoor gardens.
Winding Creek Ranch is an evolving residential development in Gypsum, Colorado.  Historically, the
ranch existed as a cattle operation.  In order to develop a more diverse food production capacity as well as beautifully landscaped nature trails, Eco Systems Design is developing landscape plans that include a forest garden and permaculture based landscaping that surrounds stream and pond water features, all of which are accessible from residential areas throughout the development.

Along the main entrance from Gypsum Creek Road, the resident will be greeted by an orchard area of apple, pear, plum, apricot and cherry trees, along with a wildflower understory.  Just ahead, lies the largest pond on the site, surrounded by the central permaculture farm area, a large greenhouse and attached restaurant.  There is every reason to believe this facility could be operated as a kind of country club, with nature trails amongst beautiful, edible landscapes and a gathering place for any number of social events.

Additionally, the farm will provide an on-site restaurant with a seasonal supply of foods, including vegetables, fruits and as well as a select few tropical foods raised in the greenhouse including figs, edible flowers. and more.   For more information, visit www.windingcreekranch.us

The Elkstone development will expand further into a sustainable agriculture operation covering the entire ranch, including the irrigated hayfields that have graced this land since its original settlement in the late 19th century.  The operation will include a variety of animals, orchards, forest gardens and annual food growing areas, toward the dream of transforming the entire ranch into a model sustainable agriculture operation.
