Growing Soils
We feed plants by feeding the life in the soil. Recognizing the amount of unnecessary labor that digging requires, as well as its harmful effects on soil structure and micro-fauna populations, we instead choose to build soil naturally by providing a continuous supply of organic matter. This organic matter, applied seasonally as mulch, provides weed suppression, moisture retention, erosion control and food for the micro-life found in the soil. By encouraging worm populations, we help speed up the mulch's decomposition while creating rich, fertile soil. In this way we are continually "feeding" the soil as well as the life that resides there, so they may thrive along with our gardens.
It all start with the soil, or so it should. We feel that the quality of the soil in your gardens, both outside and in greenhouses is integral to your long term success. Starting out with quality compost (purchased or created on your site) will help get you off to a good start, but it is essential to remember that no matter how great your starting soil is, you will need to continually return nutrients to the soil as the plants you are growing consume them. This can be accomplished easily by mimicking nature's way of making soil. Seasonal additions of organic matter and manures will help to keep your gardens thriving indefinitely. In addition, if your garden/greenhouse plan allows for forest garden guilds, we can help you choose appropriate plant varieties that will support soil health. By utilizing nitrogen fixing elements such as plants in the Legume family, and deciduous trees and shrubs that lose their leaves each year, we can assure that nutrients and organic matter are being returned to the soil with each passing season.
